Students participating in this class must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, including a booster shot, as required by the internship site.

Honors / UC / 10 credits

Learn the necessary skills to become a certified nurse assistant. Assist patients with basic personal needs such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and ambulation. Practice techniques of infection control, measure and record vital signs, and recognize psychosocial needs. After initial classroom instruction, intern at a skilled nursing facility.

To meet the UC/CSU admission requirements (“G” credit), students must complete the semester and earn a grade of 70% or better.

IMPORTANT NOTICE 1: During the clinical portion of this class, the instructor and students will be tested weekly for COVID-19. This is required by the skilled nursing facility for the protection of their patients and is at no cost to the student. Students who decline COVID-19 testing may not enroll in this class.

IMPORTANT NOTICE 2: Health occupations classes include the study of reproductive and other systems and require practicing procedures on other students and/or patients, both male and female, of differing ages. Participation in these activities is required for a certificate of completion and continuation in the career pathway. Additionally, these classes may require heavy lifting and bending. Lastly, some programs require the submission of personal information, such as DOB and social security numbers, with state agencies and/or clinical internship partners due to licensing and security clearance requirements.

Certification: Students will be eligible to take the written and performance examination to become a State Certified Nurse Assistant upon successful completion of the course with a 75% or better. Students will earn the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers card.

Prerequisites: Students must be at least 16 years of age and preference is given to seniors.  Students must be responsible for their own transportation to and from the internship site. Students must bring their original Social Security card, a valid government-issued ID, COVID-19 vaccination card, and COVID-19 Permission form (provided by Coastline ROP) to the first class session or they will be dropped. Live Scan fingerprinting, physical exam, TB clearance, and vaccinations required for all students prior to internship. Students must earn a grade of 75% or better in the classroom portion of the course to be placed at an internship site.

It is recommended that individuals with convictions other than a minor traffic violation obtain a criminal clearance from the Department of Health Services before registering for this class.

Class meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Learn about a career in the dental field. Examine the fundamentals and practice procedures needed to assist the dentist; instruction includes dental terminology and anatomy, identification and use of instruments, equipment sterilization procedures, and preparation of dental materials.

To meet UC/CSU admission requirement (“G” credit), students must complete the semester and earn a grade of 70% or better.

Prepare to work in the dental office. Instruction includes dental terminology, scheduling appointments, reception and telephone techniques, patient treatment management, dental procedures, records management, billing, collections, word processing applications, and dental insurance.

Explore career opportunities in therapeutic, diagnostic, and supportive areas. Gain practical hands-on experience in vital signs, emergency medical care, first aid, and CPR. This course is a great foundation for all other courses offered in the Health Science and Medical Technology industry sector.

To meet UC/CSU admission requirement (“G” credit), students must complete a full year (two semesters) of the course and earn a grade of 70% or better.
